Welcome to the ENGEL Family Home Page

Background

The ENGEL family was once a large, well-known, and highly regarded Jewish family in pre-war Poland. Prior to World War II a few family members emigrated to the United Kingdom, Palestine, and the U.S.A. Practically the entire remaining family was destroyed by the Holocaust leaving only a handful of survivors. Since the end of the war, there has been a continuing effort to unite the descendants of the early emigrants with those of the survivors.

Today, two generations later, these descendants have created a new, viable ENGEL family. Several successful reunions have been held, although the family is scattered over all continents. Our family tree has passed the two thousand membership mark. Many articles and a book have been published about our family.

This web site replaces The ENGEL Family Newsletter which I published from time to time. An other major purpose for this page is to facilitate the communication between family members, by providing an up-to-date listing of e-mail addresses. To view the current list and/or send a message to a listed family member click on the E-mail Directory button on the menu on the left.

The menu on the left also provides links to births, marriages and other news of significant interest to our family members. Recently, I introduced the capability of including appropriate pictures of new babies or marriage couples. I hope to chronicle such items as important accomplishments, distinguished honors, and other valuable or interesting events that happened to members of our family. If there is sufficient interest, I would like to enhance the In Memoriam section with brief obituaries. Another section presents interesting stories about some of our family members. These can be viewed by clicking on the Family Stories link on the menu. To accomplish this, I depend on contributions from you.

A family, such as ours, is a very dynamic organization. New marriages are celebrated and new children are born. We are also losing some of our dearest relatives. Changes are now reported almost weekly. To keep us aware of all these changes I try to keep the linked pages, mentioned above, current. In addition, two "lost" family branches have been rediscovered, some program enhancements have been made, and some software "bugs" have been fixed. Thus, the software evolved through a number (nineteen) new versions since it's first publication in 1954. For those of you that are interested in the database changes and progressive improvements, you may view summaries of the most recent changes (about a five-year span) by clicking the Family Tree Info button on the menu.

I have added a list of all the family names that appear in the ENGEL Family Tree. You can view it by clicking on the ENGEL Family Names button on the menu.

Special Announcement to Persons Who Purchased The ENGEL Family Book

Free Software Upgrade

Those of you who purchased The ENGEL Family book, realize that the information you received was current only as of 1994. Since that time our family increased from just under 1800 members to over 2250. In addition, there have been several program enhancements introduced (see Family Tree Info link on the left). Here is an opportunity for you to receive a diskette with the up-to-date family information and associated software.

To obtain your free upgrade:

  1. Place the diskette that came with your copy of the book into either the A or B drive of your computer. If you have only one diskette drive it is usually the A drive by default.
  2. Use your computer either in DOS or, if you use WINDOWS, the MS/DOS window.
  3. After the DOS prompt, enter: "vol a:" (no quotes, use "vol b:" if you use the B drive).
  4. In response, the system will give you a Volume ID # (usually 8 characters and a hyphen); or it might just indicate that "Volume in drive A has no label".
  5. Send me an e-mail message with this volume ID (or the fact that it does not have one), your name and (mail) address.

A diskette with the updated software should be shipped to you within a couple of weeks.

For those of you who moved your operating system to Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows XP and later systems, it may not be possible for you to use these diskettes. This is because the operating systems do not fully support DOS-based programs. I am currently looking into the possibility of modifying my programs to a Windows environment, but as of now, I don't even know whether this is possible. I will keep you informed of progress (if any).

For those of you, who have not purchased a copy of the book, there are still copies available. The 326-page book, The ENGEL Family, contains family tree charts and associated indices and a host of additional family information. It is published together with a computer diskette containing the entire family data base and all the software required to perform a number of genealogical searches on DOS-type computers (i.e., not Apple Mac). Most of the computers running on MS Windows provide a MS DOS option, which is a DOS-emulated environment (but not real DOS). In almost all cases (exceptions, see previous paragraph) this permits running the family tree diskette. Full instructions, even for the novice user, are included. For further information, check with the publishers, Genealogical Data Systems, via the link provided on the menu, or below. If you order a copy of the book/diskette package, indicate whether you prefer the original version or the upgraded version of the diskette.
